kidnapping suspect ariel castro. alex perez has the latest from cleveland. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this is the first time we're hearing from the castro brothers. until now we had not heard from them. they say in many ways they feel like they are victims and after a number of death threats, they feel like they're being hunted. this morning for the first time, we are hearing from the two men closest to ariel castro, his brothers. >> i could never think of doing anything like that. if i knew that my brother was doing this, in a minute i would have called the cops. >> reporter: in an interview with cnn, the two men, who were arrested along with their brother but were later cleared and released say they had nothing to do with kidnapping and holding three women hostage inside this house for a decade. still, they say, they fear no one will ever believe them. >> and the people out there that know me, they know that onil castro is not that person,

has nothing to do with that. >> people are going to think, yeah, pedro got something to do with this. pedro don't have nothing to do with this. if i knew, i would have reported it, brother or no brother. >> reporter: this morning, we're also a closer look at this. >> got the others in the house. >> reporter: the tense moments as cleveland police pried open the front door of ariel castro's home, freeing gina dejesus and michelle knight. the rescue caught on cell phone video by these two. they were driving on the street when they noticed the commotion and pulled over. >> police, detectives, ambulances came out of nowhere. >> reporter: moments earlier, amanda berry and her 6-year-old daughter had escaped through the bottom of this broken door running across the street and pleading with an arriving officer. >> we heard everything she was saying. she said we're in danger, please protect me. she kept grabbing him. >> reporter: and an attorney for the three young women says they spent the first full weekend of

freedom with their loved ones and filled with gratitude. george? >> i'll bet they are. okay, alex, thanks very much. now to the white house, under fire on several fronts as the president struggles to get traction for his second term. the latest headache, revelations that the irs has been targeting conservative groups, like the tea party, for extra scrutiny. abc's chief white house correspondent jon karl has the latest on that, and, jon, you dug up information overnight that the targeting began earlier than we thought. >> reporter: that's right. george, i've obtained a soon-to-be-released investigative report that shows the irs started targeting tea party groups more than three years ago. and among the criteria they used was to target groups that were critical of the way the country is being run. despite publicly claiming otherwise, the new report obtained by abc news shows the irs began targeting conservative groups as far back as 2010 and that senior irs officials have known about it for almost two years. the irs recently acknowledged

targeting groups with "tea party" or "patriot" in their names. but this morning, abc news has learned the new report goes further. the draft of that document prepared by the irs' internal watchdog says the irs was also tracking groups whose goals included "limiting government and educating on the constitution and bill of rights" and even groups that, quote, criticize how the country is being run. on friday, the white house said it had no idea that the irs was targeting tea party groups. >> there is no question that if this activity took place, it's inappropriate and there needs to be action taken. >> reporter: the irs has since apologized blaming it all on low-level employees with no political bias but conservatives aren't buying that. >> how stupid do they think we are? >> the bottom line is, they used key words to go after conservatives. >> reporter: the irs isn't the only headache for the white house which continues to take heat about the extensive editing

of the cia talking points it used to describe the attack that killed four americans in benghazi, libya, last september. >> i would call it a cover-up in the extent that there was willful removal of information which was obvious. it was obvious. >> reporter: the president will have a chance to respond to this later this morning when he has a joint press conference with david cameron, the british prime minister. >> the white house facing the questions about the irs, these questions about benghazi, trying to get the health care program up and running. do they have a plan to get back on offense now at the start of the second term? >> reporter: the big thing is to respond and move on. they believe that they can weather this stuff. they need to quickly respond and get on to their agenda, but, george, i sense no overarching plan to move on except to keep talking about the agenda. jon karl, thanks very much. let's go to josh for the other top stories including the horrifying scene in new orleans. >> indeed, it was. we'll begin this.

the violence and chaos erupting at the mother's day parade in new orleans. at least two gunmen opened fire and sparked panic as people ran for their lives, ducking into corners and jumping into backyards. about a mile and half from the famous french quarter. 19 people, including 2 children, were injured. police are now searching for a group of men spotted running away from the scene. a $10,000 reward is being offered in the case. the fbi describes the shooting as a flare-up of street violence and not terrorism. meanwhile, the other breaking story overnight from eastern pennsylvania where authorities confirm now that four children are among the six people that died in the house fire you see here in potsville. it is unclear how the fire started. also this morning, mexico is on alert as a volcano near mexico city spews ash and steam some half mile into the sky. adding to fears now that a significant eruption is coming. authorities have closed off a seven-square-mile area and are

setting up shelters as precautions. meanwhile, bloomberg news is apologizing for snooping on clients. its reporters were able to use the company's financial data terminals to access information about subscribers such as goldman sachs and so get scoops before the competition. bloomberg's editor called it and i do quote, inexcusable, end quote. another big win over the weekend for tiger woods. finishing strong, taking the title at tpc sawgrass for the second time. it's his fourth title on the year already. he's only four wins, by the way, away from the all-time pga tour record. and a mother's day surprise for a family in florida that no one wanted. they woke up and found that guy at their front door. thought it might besome kind of prank. they actually had to call in the gator trappers. watch, though, not going down without a fight was this young guy or gal.'t be sure.

whipping that tail before they finally got it all taken care of. even a little kiss. as our resident greater miami area resident, sam, i ask you to defend living in a place where the alligators ring the front doorbell. >> they were there first. just to be fair. it's a little different than emeril ringing your front doorbell. >> just coming over for a cup of sugar. >> glad it was gently taken care of. >> yes. >> thank you, there, josh. appreciate it. now to those arresting pictures of an ice wave in minnesota rising up with such force, it's destroying everything in its path. sam, these are about these temperature change, right? >> on one side of the country, the west, we have 80s, 90s, 100s today. in part of the country, the cold wind chills. 20s, 30s and 40s and because this cold air has been sitting around the great lakes, temperatures like in that feel like this, the ice hasn't had a chance to melt so that ice now picked up by winds in this pattern is blowing onshore, and that's a problem for the folks on shore.

our ginger zee is in lake malax, minnesota. >> reporter: sam, this is wild. whatting loos like heaps of snow is not. it's actually ice, shards of ice. this is what happens when it started attacking. come with me into the boat house, punctured into the walls and into this and a dozen other structures. >> it's really pushing in. >> reporter: it is a colossal blob of ice coming right toward darla johnson's cottage. all she could do was hit record. >> michael, get away from it. >> reporter: in less than ten minutes, the ice that sounded like breaking glass broke glass, in these homes, smashing right through the walls. >> it just busted through a door over here. >> reporter: the ice was pushed ashore by strong winds. look at the terrifying wave from above. at times, it climbed to three feet deep. >> it's going right through

their [ bleep ] house. >> reporter: it's called an ice heave. and it happened in manitoba, canada, this weekend too where an incredible tsunami-like wave of ice destroyed a dozen two-story homes. >> bang. the ice came right through the living room here. he said, grab your purse, grab whatever you can, get the keys. we gotta get out of here. >> reporter: you can see right back there, that's the lake. and all of that thin ice was pushed right up with those strong winds on to the shore. now, when the ice melts was about two to three weeks late. and that had a lot to do with why this happened. sam. >> absolutely and, then, ginger, the extreme from ice to what will be fire watches because these numbers are going into the 90s in that part of the country very quickly. look at minneapolis by the time we get to tuesday, 93 degrees so from a wall of ice to the potential of brush fire danger with all that hot, dry air blowing. >> what a contrast. okay, sam, thanks very much. the frightening power of mother nature is on display in northern california, josh, your mom's neighborhood, a landslide

there is destroying homes, driving residents away. worried their homes may be next. even worse, no one knows why it's happening. abc's neal karlinsky has the latest. >> reporter: what is happening to this neighborhood is a slow-motion catastrophe. homes crumbling bit by bit as the ground gives way beneath them. >> there's clearer example than this. i'm standing on the driveway of a house that has sunk 10 to 12 feet. we toured the sinking subdivision with randall fitzgerald, whose home is safe for now. and he told us he now sleeps with one eye open. >> it's called lakeside heights. we call it also landslide heights. >> reporter: take a look at this crack. it goes right through the middle of the street, up the driveway here and all the way to the house where it's pulled it apart six inches. there's something else you can't see the ground is so unlevel i'm leaning a different direction than where the rest of the house has fallen. eight homes have been abandoned. ten more are facing evacuation all because of what seems to be

a mysterious and sudden gusher of underground water. neighbors blame everything from a faulty fire hydrant to a nearby dormant volcano. >> you're talking about a lot of broken dreams and uprooted lives at this point. >> reporter: it gets worse. neighbors say they've been told that insurance coverage is unlikely. >> property values are gone. we have no equity. this is in lockdown and probably locked down maybe our entire lives. >> reporter: sewage pipes have been redirected and even mail carriers have been told to avoid this neighborhood at least until the ground stops moving. for "good morning america," neal karlinsky, abc news, lakeport, california. >> and our hearts go out to everyone there. we're just thankful that josh's mom -- >> she's okay, but it's quite a big deal. obviously. now to that big headline from our colleague and friend, barbara walters. she is announcing her retirement today later on "the view." she's a legend.

for a bizarre hotel room heist. i take it that he's going to claim that his lawyer bungled the case? >> that's right. 19 claims of ineffective counsel and conflict of interest. just to give you a sense of how pivotal this is, if he doesn't win a new trial, best case scenario, he's in jail for five more years. worst case, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars. a now graying, 65-year-old o.j. simpson goes to a nevada courtroom today hoping the judge will throw him a hail mary, by throwing out the verdict that sent him to jail. >> count one, conspiracy to commit a crime, guilty, count two, guilty, count three, guilty. >> reporter: simpson was convicted on charges of armed robbery and kidnapping in a bewildering hotel robbery in las vegas which was all caught on tape. >> don't let nobody out of here. >> reporter: each of the other

men involved took plea deal. simpson says his lawyer never told him prosecutors offered him a deal. instead, he spent the last four years behind bars. >> if he had known about an offer of two to five, he would have taken it if he understood the chances of being convicted. >> reporter: he says he had such bad representation during the trial, his entire conviction should be reversed and a new trial should be ordered. >> you went to the room, you used force. >> reporter: the former all-star running back was sentenced to a maximum of 33 years after holding up two sports memorabilia agents who were allegedly trying to sell his family pictures and other mementos in 2007 he admitted he organized five people to go to the hotel room with him but he says hidn't ny e would pull a gun. >> i didn't mean to steal anything from anybody. and i didn't know i was doing anything illegal. >> reporter: his conviction in vegas came 13 years to the day

in his famous acquittal of the murders of his ex-wife nicole and her friend, ron goldman. back in 1995, his lawyers were said to be a dream team. he's hoping to be able to convince the judge his lawyer in this case was anything but. simpson also claims his former attorney knew about the memorabilia ahead of time and advised him he was within his legal rights. we reached out to his previous attorney, yael galanter, he refused comment. olths only >> joined now by rikki klieman. she covered both of simpson's trials. a hail mary motion. not good chances for oj here? not good chances. >> not good chances. who can blame him for trying once again? one good thing for him here. if he was never, ever advised there was plea deal on the table where he could have gotten two years, then he really does have -- >> is that conceivable?

>> it's a little difficult. i tell you what i would have done. if i represented him, and i got such an offer, i would make sure not only did i tell him. i would present it to him in writing, make him countersign a piece of paper that he had heard me, he had read it, because otherwise, this could happen. >> what about a claim that the lawyer told him he could go back in the hotel room and get it? >> his lawyer may have said he was entitled to that memorabilia if he went and asked. the problem was he came in with a gang of low lives. one of them was armed. they pushed people around. there was a tape-recording. it looked like a robbery. the people in there felt like they were not free to leave. that is a kidnapping. >> we know o.j. simpson has been in jail now for five years. whap kind of demeanor do you expect from o.j. when he comes into the courtroom? >> i have read he's slower.

heavier physically. he won't be the same juice that we used to know. i'll tell you one thing, having watched him literally in a courtroom very close by, he was, no matter what we ever thought of, one of the most charismatic people of all time. he charmed them all. >> thank you, rikki. sam? >> we started talking about the warmth in the west. now the eastern seaboard. these are the morning temperatures. 21 states with temperatures near the freezing mark. the chilly nights still ahead. look at this morning, 46 in boston. monday night into tuesday morning. look again at tuesday night. those are the cool temperatures hanging tough in places like philadelphia, even washington, d.c. a quick look at where the frosty air is moving east. you're kind of stuck with it. then, as we said, the warmer temperatures right in the middle of the country in the west will start to clean up everywhere
